"You have to work hard to offend Christians. By nature, Christians are the most forgiving, understanding, and thoughtful group of people I've ever dealt with. They never assume the worst. They appreciate the importance of having different perspectives. They're slow to anger, quick to forgive, and almost never make rash judgments or act in anything less than a spirit of total love . . . No, wait--I'm thinking of Labrador retrievers!" Grace under Siege 29: "--who are not members of our church!"

At the public humiliation of Bear on Sunday, the executive elders--whom we could call more informally The Nine--made a raft of charges against him. Some of the charges were true. Bear did forward letters of accusations against the leadership written by people "who are not members of our church."
But it was not the whole truth. These people used to be members of our church. Most of them wrote that they left because they could no longer sit under deviant teaching and/or felt pressured out by the leadership.
The whole truth would have included the reason why they are not members of our church. Even a former elder who was on the Pastoral Search Committee which recommended we hire Lou left the church some time ago, saying he regrets his role in that decision.
